So I got a quote from the local Car Toys, it was ~$550 for the cheapest possible headunit, 4 speakers and install.
So I went to Amazon and Crutchfield and pieced together my own cheapest possible option for the same headunit, better speakers, an underseat powered sub, and all the wiring and adapters to make it all fairly plug and play for $219.62.
Laid it all out, checked it was all there, then moved on to wiring the headunit to stock wiring adapter.
on of the best $5 I spent on amazon was this little soldering robot holder man. Two extra hands makes things so easy.
So that all works, and fading and balancing things around confirms I wired it all correctly.
The sub took a brief bit of wiring soldering/connecting, but mostly it was just a hassle getting all the wiring run through the firewall and hidden under carpet and through plastic pieces.
Then rip off the door panels, and the rear parcel shelf and bolt in the replacement speakers. 4 screws each and zip zop zap, all done.
So now I have bluetooth, I let my itunes play random and Portishead came up during my commute, which was a good test for the tiny 8 inch sub, it did surprisingly well.
price so far?
purchase: $1000
Emissions: $25
Licence/Title/Taxes: $125-ish
Bluetooth headunit, 4 speakers, and parts to install them: $128.67
Powered underseat sub and install kit: $90.95
Wipers: $33 (after rebates)
Summer/Winter Tyre swap: $40
Running total: ~$1442.62

is it true the corolla is one of the best cars ever made?

theres kinda no denying it. it’s simply better built than my hondas or subarus of a similar gen.

That’s not a subwoofer. THIS is a subwoofer:
RE Audio XX 15" 3000 Watt RMS
I’ll get around to carpeting it eventually.

I’m doing a similar move with the Van. Except I am keeping the stock head unit, so I have to install a line-out converter to get those stock wires converted to RC. No sub, but powerful door speakers, amp, and tweeters. I’m also saving up for a ton of sound deadening because this skeleton came with near none.

my project Civic is getting mountains of sound deadening while it is stripped. Its such a rattly tin can as is.

The outer skin is literally exposed in the cargo area. No disassembly required, jus t slap it on.

you can buy my “ $1000 corolla” , only $3000!

You can use the metal backed asphaltic leak stuff from the home stores in lieu of the expensive dynamat products. Or this B-quiet stuff is a good alternative too. A bit cheaper and same stuff.

I’ll give you $ 3k if that includes delivery to my driveway.

I am not touching dynamat because of the price. I found 50 sqft. of Kilmat for $65 on amazon. Might go with that.

TBH as I get older I realize that the size of sub I really need can be smaller. Looks like a nice setup, I miss the days when cars would take a single DIN aftermarket without ripping out half the custom fitted console.

I still prefer to feel the bass, but I never go overboard. I’ve always prefered a 10inch in a real box with a real amp. but this car is just a commuter, and with the available space in the doors a small sub was needed to fill.
I certainly feel like a small sub is preferable for my family hauler, the kids hate heavy bass, so some fill without all the thump is best

yes. I’ll even throw the winter tyres in the trunk for ya. a bargain!

I had the subaru supplied 10 inch Kicker no extra amp in the STI and honestly it was almost just right with a shade of too much. I found I hate rattling trim even if I’m the one who caused it, so I think I get what you are trying to do with the family hauler.
Times past it was the case that I wanted to feel the bass in every nerve ending of my body. I recall someone with a Grand Am that had a sound system that would shake the bones out of your body when I was 11, and that was the most amazing thing for me.
Until I got tinnitus.

I really need a setup like this in my Jaguar. I don’t need a ton of bass but the stock 4” door speakers are really just midranges.

mine is 4in fronts and 5in rears; the little sub adds a lot.
